We hear this one a lot. It’s usually a homeowner pointing at a spot on the wall where they wish there was an outlet. And it’s a totally fair question. So how hard is it? Well, like most electrical work, the real answer is: It depends! So let’s break it down:
What Makes It Easier?
Sometimes adding an outlet is a quick, simple job. That’s especially true when:
- There's already an outlet on the other side of the wall (like in the next room) that can be on the same circuit
- The wall is unfinished (like in a basement or garage)
- You don’t mind surface-mounted conduit in utility spaces
- There’s easy access to the wiring in the attic or crawl space
In those cases, we might be able to cut in a box, pull power from an existing circuit, and have it all wrapped up fairly quickly.
What Makes It More Complicated?
Here’s where things get a little trickier:
- The walls are finished and we need to fish wire through insulation or fire blocks
- You're in a brick or concrete wall
- There’s no nearby circuit to safely pull power from
- The circuit we’re adding it to doesn’t have Arc-Fault or Ground-Fault protection and it’s required where we’re adding the outlet
- You’re in a kitchen or bathroom, where extra code requirements apply (GFCI, spacing, circuit load)
Just know that we’re always going to install things safely and to code, and sometimes that means more time or materials to do it right.

So How Much Work Are We Talking?
Most standard outlet additions land between $150 and $500, depending on complexity and if it’s the only thing we are doing there. A straightforward install might take 30–60 minutes total. Something more involved could take a few hours — especially if drywall cutting, patching, or attic access is required.

What If I Want USB Outlets? Or Outdoor Outlets?
No problem. We can add:
- USB combo outlets near desks or charging areas
- Weather-rated GFCI outlets for patios or garages
- Smart outlets you can control from your phone
- Dedicated outlets for things like treadmills, fridges, or sump pumps
