Are you thinking about buying an electric car? Or do you already have one on the way?
One of the most important (and confusing) steps is figuring out how to charge it at home. Dealerships often say, “Just install a charger,” but don’t always explain what that means or how much it costs.
Let’s break it down.

Typical EV Charger Installation Costs
At Great Northern Electric, most EV charger installs fall between $1,100 and $4,000, but that is including the charger and circuit, not a service upgrade. Your total investment depends on a few key factors:
- Distance from your panel to your charger location
- Whether your panel has capacity
- Garage type (attached, detached, finished walls, etc.)
- Type of charger you’re installing (hardwired charger vs. an outlet to plug a charger into)
What’s Included in a Standard Install
Most installs include:
A 240V 40-60-amp dedicated circuit
240V 50A outlet or hardwired charger
Proper conduit, cable, and breaker installation
Proper grounding and bonding
Permits and inspection
We also label everything clearly, and we’ll walk you through how it works. Depending on the charger brand, we may need you to help with the setup, or startup, in order for the charger to charge. This will likely include you downloading an app that goes with the charger.

What Could Increase the Price?
Not all projects are created equal. Here are some things that can affect the price:
- We need to upgrade your panel or electrical service from the utility to support the charger
- The power needs to be trenched out to a detached garage
- Installing the charger outdoors
- Installing a smart charger that needs extra setup
If you’re not sure about your setup, don’t worry. We will check it out and give you exact pricing and options before we get going, so you will be in control and know EXACTLY how much it will cost, not a range. No “Time & Material” here where you sit around wondering, “How long is this going to take and how much is it going to cost?”
Should You Buy the Charger or Let Us Supply It?
We’re happy to install customer-supplied chargers, provided it is a listed piece of equipment, or we can supply one that fits your needs without you having to worry about where to get it or making sure it arrives on time for us to install it!
Let’s talk about what’s best for your vehicle, driving habits, and future plans.
